The COVID-19 pandemic is proving to be an epoch-making catastrophe. In addition to the tragic loss of so many lives and the ordeal of those who are recovering from the effects of the disease, the social and economic consequences are already staggering. The IMF predicted in June that the world’s GDP will contract by 4.9% in 2020, the worst slump since the Great Depression and the United Nations University’s World Institute for Development Economics Research (WIDER) fears it could push up to half a billion people into poverty.

De COVID-19 pandemie blijkt een enorme catastrofe te zijn. Bovenop het tragische verlies van zo veel levens en het gevecht van de mensen die herstellende zijn van de ziekte, zijn de sociale en economische consequenties onthutsend. Het Internationaal Montair Fonds (IMF) voorspelde in juni dat het wereldwijde bruto nationaal product (BNP) met 4,9 procent zal krimpen in 2020; wat de grootste inzinking sinds de ‘Great Depression’ van de jaren 30 van de vorige eeuw zou betekenen. Ook vreest het World Institute for Development Economics Research (WIDER) van de United Nations University dat meer dan een half miljard mensen de armoede in worden gedrukt.
